The Festival of Light and The Winter Solstice

The longest night

Today, 12/21/2017, is the winter solstice. It is the shortest day with the longest night, when the sun slowly ascends . The solstice is a celebration of light, rebirth, transformation and renewal. As the year reaches it’s end and towards it’s final day of prolonged darkness, the sun’s cycle is renewed and we experience a moment of rebirth as we return towards the light.

Solstice Astrology

On this day the sun also enters Capricorn. Capricorn will be in conjunction with Saturn. When the sun is conjunct with another planet it is called a Cazimi. A Cazimi is a Medieval astrological term that is used to refer to planets that are so close to a conjunction with the Sun that they are “in the heart” of the Sun. What this means is that the planet becomes stronger as the sun engulfs it so the other planet is unrecognizable. The strength of Saturns influence on the earth is double since it has also entered its rulership. Saturn is the planet of justice/enlightenment it’s day is Saturday and Capricorn being an earth sign carries with it the energy for grounding.

W is For Winter

Winter is cold and most people try to stay in to avoid freezing temperatures. This time, for the mystic, is a time for meditation and introspection. It is a time to slow down our rhythm and attune ourselves with the energies of renewal. To get into the rhythm of this season we can spend time in silence and observation. Maybe for you this is reading a book, painting, or working on a spiritual project. In winter most people experience the lower energy of this season. The sun is bleak, the plants are dying, and the animals are seeking shelter. The little rabbits and squirrels aren’t as visible as usual. We have to remember that this season is a test for most and can be use to transmute our base emotions.

The Festival of Light

The festival of light has roots that can be traced back to ancient Egypt. It is the adoration of the sun and the light that it shines forth. Candles are lit to symbolize the triumph of light over darkness.

Today light a candle to bring the light back to yourself and the world.

Meditate for peace/enlightenment around the world, for your family, and yourself.

Remain in silence for 2 hours (if possible). Use the this time for introspection.
