Was Christian Rosenkreuz A Living Person?

Was Christian Rosenkreuz A Living Person?

Christian Rosenkreuz was a semi-mythical Qabbalist, Alchemist and founder of the Rosicrucian Order. Legends say he traveled to the Middle East to places like Egypt, Turkey, and Persia, where he obtained esoteric (hidden) knowledge and wisdom from the great sages he encountered along the way (possibly Sufi or Zoroastrian masters), this possibly happened in the early 15th century. Legend has it that when he returned from his travels he founded the “Fraternity of the Rose Cross,” with his Initials “Frater C.R.C.” As Head of the Order, under his direction a Temple, called “Sanctus Spiritus,” (The House of the Holy Spirit) was built.

Man, Myth or Legend?

The legend also says a Brother of the Order discovered Christian Rosenkreuz body inside a Heptagonal Crypt Chamber 120 years after his death, and to his surprise the body was still perfectly preserved. It was also said inside this crypt there was a Sarcophagus with the inscription, “Jesus mihi omnia, nequaquam vacuum, libertas evangelii, dei intacta gloria, legis jugum” (“Jesus is everything to me, by no means empty, the freedom of the gospel, the untouched glory of God, the yoke of the law”)

There’s another description in the legend that says the crypt of Rosenkreuz is located in the interior of the Earth with the alchemical motto “V.I.T.R.I.O.L” written on his Sarcophagus: “Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem” (“Visit the interior of the Earth; by rectification thou shalt find the hidden stone”). The question still remains, was there a real historical person by the name of Christian Rosenkreuz? The story of his life and death are both shrouded in mystery, and I will attempt to decode some of his secrets.

The legend presented in the Manifestos left behind have been interpreted by Initiates to be allegorical and symbolical as are all alchemical texts. They don’t directly say the year and death of Christian Rosenkreuz, but in the second Manifesto it says the birth year of our “Christian Father” was “1378,” and that he lived for “106” years, which would mean he died in 1484.

The Rosicrucians are well known for having adopted the Pythagorean tradition of deducing esoteric things to numeric values saying, “We speak unto you by parables, but would willingly bring you to the right, simple, easy and ingenuous exposition, understanding, declaration, and knowledge of all secrets”.

Hidden Meaning Of CRC:

Let’s start by breaking down his initials “C.R.C” using Qabalistic Gematria. In old German the letter “C” is the same as “K” in modern German. Using Hebrew it will be “Kaph-Resh-Kaph,” a metathesis of “Kaph-Kaph-Resh” or “KKR.” Interestingly, “KKR” means “Circle” in Hebrew. The circle has long been a symbol of the one reality, or NO-thing that can be named, by some mystery schools it is the “I-AM”.

Also, “Kaph-Resh” or “KR” is the Hebrew word for “Car” which actually means “Lamb”. Lamb was also the title of the “Christos,” or Jesus in the book of Revelation. “Resh Kaph” or “RK” in Hebrew is “ROK,” which means “Tenderness,” related to the Initial “Frater R.C”. These Initials that are giving in the Fama Fraternitatisis is perhaps to mean “Tenderness or compassion is the true character of a True Rosicrucian” . Qabalistically speaking, both “CR” or “Resh-Kaph” using Gematria adds up to 220. 220 is a very significant number in Qabalah. Why? Because 22×10=220, symbolizing the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet, and/or the twenty-two paths on the Tree of Life, and the 10 symbolizes the 10 “Sephiroth” (spheres) on the Tree of Life. The Rosicrucian rose, a sacred symbol of the Rosicrucians also has 22 petals, and in Numerology 22 is the “Master Builder” of mystical numbers.

Hidden Meaning Of 1378:

Christian Rosenkreuz was born on 1378, so lets break this number down Qabalistically. The number “1” represents Unity, the number “3” represents the Holy Trinity, the number “7” represents the creating powers of Elohim, and the number “8” represents eternity, and is also the number of Hermes. Eight can also be broken down into two additional numbers of “2 & 6” (2+6=8), which is the number of “IHVH”, the four-letter Tetragrammation name of god (Hebrew: “Yod Heh Vau Heh”).

The number 137 is also the value of “QBLH” (the Hebrew spelling of Qabalah), with the last number “8” being the number of Christ or Hermes, indicating he was a man of Hermetic teachings i.e. “Christian Hermeticism”.

Hidden Meaning Of 106:

Christian Rosenkreuz is said to have died at the age of 106. In Qabalah 106 is the value of “NVN,” which is “Nun” in Hebrew, meaning “Fish”. Esoterically, the fish symbolizes “Christos” (anointment). The letter “Nun” is also connected to the Zodiac sign of Scorpio, representing the hidden force or Kundalini (a.k.a serpent). When Kundalini is preserved and raised it lifts us up to the highest degree of consciousness or self-realization, the eternal “I-AM” which is typified by an image of a dove or an eagle.

The metaphorical nature of Christian Rosenkreuz legends can only lead one to assume his life, death, and foundational stones with which Rosicrucianism was built, was left behind to aid Initiates in their quest for inner wisdom, by offering us clues for alchemical transmutation i.e. “The Great Work”.
